“Can you build a website?” It bothered me to tell people, “well, kinda.” I knew how to put the elements of photography, typography and colors together with my print background, but how to stick them on the pixelated cyberspace, I was lost. I joined the ThermoServ team just as I was entering in my second semester of school to boost my BFA with an associates in Web Design. They were in the process of launching their newly branded website using Volusion, an Austin-based eCommerce platform. Once launched, the site needed customization. I had just learned HTML, and after carefully navigating the back files of the site, found the code and style sheets to make the requested customizations possible. After seeing what code and I could do, I was hooked.
Deb Ferns needed a new website. So much so that she invited me to Montana to observe what she and her team of champion instructors do. They are women who teach women gun safety and how to properly handle and shoot firearms. I was told to bring my camera and a good pair of boots. After getting some great photographs of the ladies, I was told to put the camera down and gear up. I now have a first-hand experience of what it is like to be a camper and how to shoot different firearms in a controlled and safe environment. When I arrived home, I used another eCommerce platform, BigCommerce, another great company based in Austin. Their platform allowed a fast set-up for a tight deadline to get campers singed up for the 2018 season. Deb’s accountant loves how organized their invoice system is and how it integrates with Stripe. The site is still in the works and allows custom coding for a more customized feel.
A friend of mine asked for me to make a simple landing page for the logo I created for him using simple HTML. The site is now on hold, but will be fun to finish!
For a class project, I worked with a team that was assigned to build a website that would focus on pre-teen and teens for ALOUD, the Alliance on Underage Drinking based in Dallas, TX. With no budget, we were able to create a customized WordPress page that met the client’s requests. The page is now in the client’s hands for final details.
